Paint
Supplies

DIY vs. pro: DIY paint for a 12×12 room runs ~$130–$240. A pro typically charges $300–$800 per room for labor alone. The paint itself is the cheap part — you're paying for prep and time.

How this estimate works

The estimator multiplies your gallons by a per-gallon price and adds supplies — nothing fancier than that, deliberately. The three tiers are 2026 US retail ballparks: budget lines around $25 a gallon, mid-grade around $45, and premium lines around $65. Real prices move with sales, region, and the specific product line, which is why the price field is editable: if you are holding a quote or a shelf tag, type that number in and the tiers stop mattering. Supplies default to $40, roughly what a room costs in roller covers, tape, tray liners, and a drop cloth when you already own a frame and brushes. Starting from zero — frame, brushes, ladder, the works — budget $100 to $150 for the first room and much less after.

Example projects

One bedroom, 2 gallons. Mid-grade at $45 plus $40 of supplies: about $130, the classic weekend repaint. Stepping up to premium adds $40 and often saves the second coat on a color change, which is why the cheap paint can cost more in time.

Living room and hallway, 4 gallons. Mid-grade paint is $180, supplies another $40 to $60 because hallways eat tape and drop cloths: roughly $220 to $240 all in, versus $900 or more for a pro crew on the same space.

Whole main floor, 9 gallons. Budget tier: about $225 in paint. Premium: about $585. The $360 gap is the real decision in a big project — on high-traffic walls the premium usually earns it back in washability, while closets and ceilings never notice the difference. Mixing tiers by room is normal and sensible.

For high-traffic areas, usually: better coverage (sometimes one coat vs. two) and scrubbable finishes. For a spare bedroom, mid-grade is the sweet spot.
